What role do parents play at Just Little People?

We invite all parents to join us during the day between 8:00 am and 12:30 pm or between 4:00 pm and 4:30 pm to participate with all the children.  Here's how you get involved:

  • Note writing of conversations between children is always wonderful (we will provide you with pen and paper).
  • Role model gentle and respectful language.
  • Give the "children" your focus while in our school.
  • Parents, please visit with one another outside. Thank you!
  • Uphold our image of children as powerful, creative, resourceful, and capable human beings.

What are the parent responsibilities at Just Little People?

  • To supply us with any special foods, clothing, or equipment.
  • To bring your child to our school bathed and in clean clothes.
  • To bring seasonal clothing, i.e., coats, boots, mittens, swimsuit, and a complete clean change of clothes. PLEASE label all clothing with your child's name.
  • To notify us of any changes in emergency phone numbers or address.
  • To inform us of changes in the child's behavior or life circumstances, such as divorce or death.
  • To notify us a least one week in advance of your vacations.  This needs to be in writing, please.
  • To notify us (60 days)in advance of your discontinuation of preschool.

What is your guidance policy?

We are encouraged to maintain firm, but loving discipline, which is aimed toward teaching a child to discipline his or her own behavior and respect the rights of others.

We respect children as individuals and understand their many feelings.  Children are, after all, "just little people" with all the same feelings, worries, and curiosities as adults!

What type of volunteer opportunities are available?

We believe Just Little People is not just a preschool, but rather a small community made up of children, parents, teachers, and the people within our neighborhood.  We invite you, as parents, to be an active part of this community whenever your schedule will permit.
Here is a list of just a few ways you can help out:

  • Join us for Gym Day at the Montavilla Community Center (check with teachers for time and day).  8219 NE Glisan St., Portland, OR 97211
  • Assemble student journals, help compile artwork, photos and jounal entries into the children's notebooks - a great way to find out what has been going on at school.
  • Share your special talents, interests and skills.  We all have our own unique gifts. Come and be a guest artist at our school for a couple of hours.  And culinary artists are artists too.
  • Read.  It is that simple.  Come and read stories.
  • Garden: our  facility has potential for any and all green thumbs out there itching to get dirty.  Help us to create a fertile environment inside and out.
  • Computer printing of children's conversations to be documented.
  • News and Notes newsletter.
